Best time to fish
When the fish are biting. Chris goes out any time and if they bite, he stays, if not he tries again later. The fish aren’t on any schedule—sometimes they’re here, sometimes they’re somewhere else.

Live Bait
If you prefer live bait, the bait shops in Rockport and Fulton have fresh live shrimp most of the time. Finger mullet, pin fish, croaker, piggy perch and crabs are seasonal. If you have a cast net, you can catch live bait from the bay. Small crabs are great for big reds and the other bait will catch everything.
|
|
Dead Bait
Don’t buy squid—it doesn’t work in the bays (except for hard heads that eat anything). Dead shrimp work for everything and can be purchased at the bait stands. Chris has caught large reds using full size crabs cracked in half (no claws, no top shell). Dead mullet, pin fish, and other cut bait usually catch hard heads and crabs.

How to Fish Live and Dead Bait
For bobber fishing, use a 12-18” leader from the bottom of the bobber to your hook. Place weight in between the bobber and the hook if using one. When fishing on the bottom, use half ounce sliding weight, swivel, and 18” leader to hook.

Lures
Any freshwater bass lure will catch trout. Chris's favorite lures are Bass Assassins and Salt Water Assassins. Clear with gold speckle and light colors with chartreuse tails during the day. At night, the #1 Bass Assassin for Chris is black back, light grey belly, no sparkle Bass Assassin. Chris says he has caught “thousands” of trout with these at night. Other good colors at night are dark red, white, and motor oil. These Bass Assassins can be purchases locally at Larry’s Tackle Town on Business 35 N. of the Wal-Mart and next to Café Vallarta. (Mention that Miss Kitty sent you.) Speck rigs work well for reds and trout. Small jigs and Bass Assassins bounced off the bottom have caught many flounder. Chris has also caught a few reds and trout on spoons and crank baits. “Bass Assassins Rule” says Chris, and no, he’s not getting kick backs from the company to say this. If you need help using and rigging Bass Assassins, give Chris a call. |

Fishing Line
No need to use anything larger than 15 lb test line for bait fishing. Chris only uses 8&10 lb test line for lure fishing as well as bait fishing. He hasn’t broken off that many fish.
|
|
Noise Level
The quieter you are, the more fish you will catch, however, how do you keep your 6 year old from jumping up and down and clapping every time they catch a 4 inch yellow tail?

Lights
Chris turns on the lights at sun set (T-head area lights will not come on until its dark). Please turn the lights off when you are done fishing. Chris waits until dark to start fishing, but you don’t have to.
